Welcome to marine science! New UGA graduate students get their feet wet.

Beginning graduate students in the University of Georgia Department of Marine Sciences received a quick welcome to the field through a one-week long special course conducted at UGA Skidaway Institute of Oceanography from August 21-26. Ten students participated, three who will be home-based at Skidaway Institute and seven on the main campus in Athens.

Inaugural Semester@Skidaway kicks off

The fall semester 2022 marks a major milestone in the growth of the University of Georgia Skidaway Institute’s education mission beyond its historical role as a research laboratory. The Semester@Skidaway domestic field study program will be a significant part of the UGA Department of Marine Sciences new undergraduate ocean sciences major.


Alexander voted president-elect of SAML

UGA Skidaway Institute of Oceanography director Clark Alexander was voted the 2022-23 president-elect of the Southern Association of Marine Laboratories (SAML), and will serve as president for 2023-2024. SAML is a regional organization within the National Association of Marine Laboratories.


Gliders and saildrones conduct joint exercise at Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary

The UGA Skidaway Institute of Oceanography and Saildrone recently conducted a joint exercise utilizing autonomous underwater vehicles (gliders) and autonomous surface vessels called saildrones at Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary. Girls learn marine science in special program at UGA Skidaway Institute

Summer interns experience first research cruise

On the weekend of June 11-12, UGA Skidaway Institute interns and grad students had, what for many was the first, opportunity to go to sea on a research cruise. They joined assistant professor Natalie Cohen on the R/V Savannah for a day-long research cruise.


Interns begin summer of education & research

Our class of summer interns is starting to roll in. We expect a total of eight undergraduate students from a variety of institutions. Their assignments will represent all the science specialties as well as one information technology intern.
