SUMMARY:Dedication of Ocean Sciences Instructional Center
DESCRIPTION:A 71-year old cattle barn will be reborn as a modern classroom and laboratory building in a dedication ceremony on Oct. 22 at the University of Georgia Skidaway Institute of Oceanography on Skidaway Island\, Ga. University president Jere Morehead presided over the ceremony\, which capped the year-long renovation of the reinforced concrete and steel beam structure. \n \nThe ceremony will also include comments from Don Waters\, who represents the First Congressional District and serves as chair of the University System of Georgia Board of Regents\, and UGA-Skidaway Institute Department of Marine Sciences graduate student Kun Ma. \nWith the support of the Chatham County Legislative Delegation\, the Georgia General Assembly appropriated $3 million in 2016 to remodel and repurpose a cattle barn on the Skidaway campus into functional laboratory and classroom space. The renovated building will be called the Ocean Sciences Instructional Center. \nThe center contains two state of the art digital classrooms. These can be used by Skidaway Institute-based Department of Marine Sciences faculty to teach courses that include students on the main UGA campus in Athens\, or for Athens-based faculty to teach students at Skidaway Institute in courses such as marine microbiology\, biogeochemistry\, quantitative methods in marine science\, and physical oceanography. \nThe building also houses a teaching laboratory and prep lab designed to support up to 20 students. The intentional design of the lab includes a large observation window that will allow visitors to watch research and instruction in progress. It is named for the late Albert Dewitt Smith\, Jr.\, a UGA alumnus. \nIn addition to several faculty offices\, the Ocean Sciences Instructional Center offers ample collaborative space for students and faculty to work together on projects. \nThe building now known as the Ocean Sciences Instructional Center was originally built in 1948 by Robert and Dorothy Roebling\, who operated a cattle breeding facility they called Modena Plantation.\nThe Roeblings designed the barn as the venue for their annual cattle show that attracted buyers from around the country and Europe. They built a round structure\, 110-feet in diameter\, with a ring of stalls around the perimeter\, and nursing and holding stalls in the inner circle. It contained a second deck for hay storage and auction seating. At one end\, there was a small silo with a feed mixing room and an attached apartment for a herdsman. In 1967\, the Roeblings donated their property to the State of Georgia to become the home of Skidaway Institute of Oceanography. \nSince Skidaway Institute took over the property\, the barn has served primarily as storage and as a place to prepare large pieces of equipment for research cruises or deployments. \nUGA Skidaway Institute has maintained ties to the Roebling family\, and several family members are expected to be on hand for the dedication. \nOne of the Roeblings’ sons\, Wainwright “Rip” Roebling\, described the barn as his father’s pride and joy. “I know Mother and Dad would be very proud of it\, just as we are.” \nThe architect for the Ocean Sciences Instructional Center was Cogdell/Mendrala. The construction manager was New South Construction.

SUMMARY:Skidaway Marine Science Day October 13
DESCRIPTION:An afternoon of activities\, tours and talks will make Skidaway Marine Science Day a can’t-miss event for all ages on Saturday\, Oct. 13\, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the University of Georgia Skidaway Marine Science Campus\, located on the north end of the island (10 Ocean Science Circle\, Savannah\, Ga. 31411). The campus-wide open house will be presented by the UGA Skidaway Institute of Oceanography\, UGA Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant\, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary. \nTours of UGA Skidaway Institute of Oceanography’s Research Vessel Savannah are a popular activity at Skidaway Marine Science Day. \nThe UGA Aquarium\, run by Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant\, will be open to visitors with no admission fee. Aquarium educators will offer visitors an afternoon full of activities\, including a hands-on reptile exhibit\, behind-the-scenes peeks of the aquarium\, fish feedings and microscope investigations. A touch tank exhibit will allow guests of all ages to get up close and personal with common coastal invertebrates such as spider crabs\, whelks and horseshoe crabs. \nVisitors will also have the opportunity to meet the aquarium’s newest temporary resident\, a loggerhead hatchling that was discovered in early August as a straggler in a nest on Ossabaw Island by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. \nThis loggerhead sea turtle was hatched in early August. \nThe hatchling will reside at the UGA Aquarium as an education ambassador for roughly three years before being released. Visit the hatchling during Skidaway Marine Science Day by picking up a free ticket for a behind-the-scenes tour\, available in the aquarium lobby. \nThe UGA Skidaway Institute of Oceanography’s 92-foot oceangoing Research Vessel Savannah will be open for tours and will exhibit science displays. Elsewhere on campus\, Skidaway Institute will present a variety of marine science exhibits and hands-on science activities. \nThe UGA Shellfish Laboratory research team will offer behind-the-scenes tours of Georgia’s only oyster hatchery. The hatchery is also a part of UGA Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant\, a unit of UGA Public Service and Outreach. Researchers hope the oyster hatchery will make the Georgia oyster aquaculture a more durable and sustainable coastal industry. \nAlong with the campus organizations\, Skidaway Marine Science Day will also include displays\, demonstrations and activities from a wide range of nonprofit and governmental science\, environmental and education groups\, such as The Dolphin Project\, the Georgia Sea Turtle Center and the Savannah Wildlife Refuge. \nFor the second year\, Skidaway Marine Science Day will also feature food trucks from the Savannah Food Truck Festival. \nAll admissions and activities at Skidaway Marine Science Day are free and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:Plastic pollution in the environment has become a major problem in the last several decades. In addition to the easily visible plastic debris\, smaller pieces of plastic\, termed microplastics\, are found nearly everywhere and interact with organisms at the base of aquatic food chains. There are more than a trillion microplastic particles and fibers in Georgia’s coastal waters alone\, according to an estimate by a team of researchers at the University of Georgia Skidaway Institute of Oceanography. These microplastics are ingested by local marine organisms\, with uncertain health effects. \nA microscopic view of a microfiber. \nUniversity of Georgia Skidaway Institute of Oceanography scientist Jay Brandes has been investigating microplastic pollution on the Georgia coast and will present an Evening @ Skidaway program to discuss both the longer term trends in plastic pollution as well as what reasonable steps might be taken to reduce it in our local environment. DESCRIPTION:While much oceanographic research is still conducted by scientists going to sea in ships\, in recent years\, new technologies have allowed oceanographers to explore the ocean by using underwater robots. \nUniversity of Georgia Skidaway Institute of Oceanography researcher Catherine Edwards will present an Evening @ Skidaway program to describe her work with robots on Tuesday\, June 12\, in the McGowan Library on the University of Georgia Skidaway Marine Science Campus (10 Ocean Science Circle\, Savannah\, GA 31411). The event will begin with a reception at 6:15 p.m.\, followed by the program at 7 p.m. \nCatherine Edwards works on the tail assembly of one of UGA Skidaway Institute’s gliders. \nThe robots\, also called autonomous underwater vehicles or gliders\, can be packed with sensors to monitor a wide range of oceanographic conditions. They cruise the depths for weeks at a time\, periodically surfacing to use a satellite phone to transmit their information back to their home laboratory and receive new instructions. The robots can record ocean conditions when traditional ship-based research is not practical\, like during a tropical storm\, and frequently at a small fraction of what a ship would cost. \nThe program is open to the public\, and admission is free. DESCRIPTION:The Atlantic Ocean near Cape Hatteras\, N.C. is often called the “Graveyard of the Atlantic” due to the complex ocean currents and weather conditions that have historically caused numerous shipwrecks. \nDr. Dana Savidge \nUniversity of Georgia Skidaway Institute of Oceanography researcher Dana Savidge will present an Evening @ Skidaway program to explore some of the oceanic mysteries of that area\, and describe her search for answers. The program will be presented on Tuesday\, April 10\, in the McGowan Library on the University of Georgia Skidaway Marine Science Campus (10 Ocean Science Circle\, Savannah\, GA 31411). The event will begin with a reception at 6:15 p.m.\, followed by the program at 7 p.m. \nThe coastal ocean near Cape Hatteras is a challenging and exciting area in which to investigate ocean circulation. The region is beset by numerous tropical storms and hurricanes\, ocean currents\, like the Gulf Stream\, strong seasonal winds and waves\, and unusually strong local gradients in water temperature and salinity. The dynamic ocean response to this complexity accounts for the region’s navigational treachery\, and its ominous nickname. \nA mix of state of the art oceanographic tools and models have recently been deployed to the area to assist researchers in understanding how circulation evolves there. In her talk\, Savidge will explore the region\, the intriguing mix of tools\, the new windows they will open into this environment and the rationale for why new knowledge is needed there. \nThe program is open to the public\, and admission is free. DESCRIPTION:50 Years of Science at Skidaway Institute: People\, Platforms and Partnerships\nFrom the founding of Skidaway Institute of Oceanography in 1968\, the field of oceanography has grown by giant proportions. \n \nTo kick off a year-long series of programs to celebrate the Institute’s 50th anniversary\, Dr. Herb Windom will look back at the amazing progress of marine research and the way it has opened mankind’s eyes to the wonders and mysteries of the ocean. \nIn 1968\, Windom was the first faculty scientist hired at Skidaway Institute of Oceanography. As he conducted his own research\, he also watched the science grow as new researchers and technology allowed scientists to answer questions they hadn’t known to ask years earlier. Windom served as director of the Institute for several years in the 1990s. SUMMARY:Science Seminar: How is the Gulf of Mexico like a Teapot?
DESCRIPTION:McGowan Library Auditorium\nUGA Skidaway Institute of Oceanography\nJoseph Kuehl\, Ph.D.\nAssistant Professor\nUniversity of Delaware \nDescription: \nThe existence of multiple steady flow states in nonlinear fluid dynamic systems has been observed in many situations. Probably the most well known classical fluid dynamic example is the Coanda (Teapot) Effect\, in which a slowly tilted teapot will spill. In oceanography\, the discussion of multiple steady states is generally concerned with the density driven (thermohaline) overturning circulation which connects the upper and lower ocean and its climatological implications. However\, in this work multiple steady states are identified as the result of a different fundamental balance than the two examples given above. In the context of a gap leaping boundary current (loop current) it is shown that the competition between inertia and vorticity constraints can lead to multiple steady states (gap leaping or gap penetrating). Barotropic and baroclinic rotating table experiments will be presented and various properties of the system will be explored. \nDr. Kuehl holds Ph.D.s in mechanical engineering and physical oceanography from the University of Rhode Island and Graduate School of Oceanography (2009). His research interests include hypersonic boundary-layer stability (numerical laminar-turbulent transition)\, nonlinear vibrations (time series analysis\, modal decomposition techniques and finite time invariant manifold analysis) and geophysical fluid dynamics (gap-leaping boundary currents\, geophysical boundary layer dynamics and transport phenomena). He was the recipient of the AFOSR Young Investigator Award (2015) for his hypersonic boundary layer stability and transition research\, participates in the NATO STO AVT-240 hypersonic vehicle working group and has been selected for the National Academy of Science Committee on Advancing Understanding of the Gulf of Mexico Loop Current Dynamics.
