Welcome to Skidaway Institute of Oceanography!
Founded in 1968 as a non-degree-granting campus of the University System of Georgia, Skidaway Institute of Oceanography (SkIO) is now a unit of The University of Georgia (UGA), one that catalyzes collaboration in leading-edge research, education and public service and policy in Georgia and the southeastern coastal region. The Institute conducts leading edge research on marine and coastal systems, trains tomorrow's marine scientists, and serves as a gateway to marine environments. We are committed to excellence in research and education, and to the communication of our understanding of marine systems. The goal of the Institute is to create a more knowledgeable citizen, capable of appreciating coastal natural environments and the conditions required to sustain them, while capitalizing on coastal economic opportunities.
2013 brings change and new opportunities. A new faculty member in trace element geochemistry has arrived on campus, and Skidaway has aligned its efforts with UGA. This new relationship will streamline operations and enhance the research and education efforts of both SkIO's and UGA's marine and coastal programs. At the same time, however, SkIO will continue interactions with other institutional partners, such as Savannah State University and the Georgia Institute of Technology. The overarching goal for this alignment is to continue to build a University System of Georgia-wide network in the ocean sciences, and to achieve much more collectively than individually.
I appreciate your past interest and support. I encourage you to become more involved with Skidaway's programs as we begin this new journey. I look forward to your comments and ideas.
