
Although the open ocean may seem far away, it plays a powerful role in shaping our coastal ecosystems. In an interview-style conversation during Evening at Skidaway, Dr. Lukas Taenzer, a post-doctoral researcher in SkIO faculty member Dr. Nick Foukal’s lab, explores the connections between offshore and coastal waters, addressing questions such as: What separates the open ocean from the coast? How do offshore waters reach our shorelines and estuaries? And how do changes in the open ocean affect fisheries and coastal ecosystems?

The UGA Skidaway Institute of Oceanography (SkIO) is a multidisciplinary research and education institution located on Skidaway Island near Savannah, Georgia. The Institute was founded in 1967 with a mission to conduct research in all fields of oceanography. In 2013, SkIO was merged with the University of Georgia. The campus serves as a gateway to coastal and marine environments for programs throughout the University System.
