Evening @ Skidaway Open Lab Night

The University of Georgia Skidaway Institute of Oceanography will present an “Open Lab Night” as part of its yearlong Evening @ Skidaway series of public programs to celebrate the Institute’s 50th anniversary. On Tuesday, May 15, visitors will have the opportunity to visit informally with scientists in their laboratories. The program will begin with a reception at 6:15 p.m., followed by lab visits until 8 p.m. at 10 Ocean Science Circle, Savannah, GA 31411.

The scientists participating in the program will include biologist Marc Frischer whose research involving black gill in shrimp is answering many questions for the Georgia shrimping industry. Another biologist, Elizabeth Harvey, will introduce visitors to the fascinating and beautiful world of microscopic marine plants known as phytoplankton. Julia Diaz will discuss her research which is focused on the interaction of chemistry and microbiology of the oceans and how this interaction affects ecosystem health. Chemist Jay Brandes is studying the prevalence of microplastics in Georgia’s coastal waters.
