We like to call the scientists and students involved with the DolLAYER and DolMICROBE projects “doliolideers” because we study doliolids (and other zooplankton) and our group is cohesive like the 3 musketeers. Recently, we had 2 of our PhD students from DolMICROBE, which started back in 2020, defend their PhD research. This involves writing a ~200 page research document (the dissertation) and then giving a ~45 minute public defense where you explain the scientific value of the work, the hypotheses, results addressing those hypotheses, and broader conclusions. We are proud to share that Emily Gipson and Patrick Duffy both successfully defended their PhDs this summer – congratulations to Dr. Gipson and Dr. Duffy!
Also, Patrick Duffy recently had a chapter from his dissertation published in the journal Limnology & Oceanography. You can read a summary of the main findings written by Jackson Schroeder. The entire paper can be downloaded and read at the publisher’s website (open access). Both Patrick and Emily have many exciting new findings from their research that we anticipate being published in the scientific literature. So there is much more for them to share with their budding scientific careers.
