SkIO faculty promoted

Three University of Georgia Skidaway Institute of Oceanography (SkIO) faculty members have been promoted to associate professor with tenure in the Department of Marine Sciences at UGA’s Franklin College of Arts and Sciences. The promoted faculty are Adam Greer, Daniel Ohnemus and Sara Rivero-Calle.

Adam Greer joined SkIO in 2019 as an assistant professor. He studies the oceanographic, life-history and behavioral processes controlling the abundance and spatial distribution of zooplankton populations. Zooplankton encompass a diverse community of animals, from crustaceans to gelatinous organisms and the early life stages of fishes, and are pivotal to the health of ocean ecosystems.

Greer holds a Bachelor of Arts in Ecology, Evolution and Organismal Biology from Vanderbilt University and a Doctor of Philosophy in Marine Biology and Fisheries from the University of Miami. Prior to SkIO, Greer was an assistant research professor at the University of Southern Mississippi (USM) from 2018-19, a postdoctoral associate at USM from 2015-18, and a postdoctoral associate at UGA from 2013-15.

Daniel Ohnemus joined SkIO in 2018 as an assistant professor. His research focuses on marine particles — the dynamic mixture of living and nonliving, mostly microscopic, powerhouses of the ocean. Particles consume, transport and transform the elements of the ocean, and their interactions determine how, where and why the ocean uses and recycles major nutrients and micronutrient trace elements.

Ohnemus holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Chemistry from Williams College and a Doctor of Philosophy in Chemical Oceanography from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology-Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Joint Program. Prior to SkIO, Ohnemus was a postdoctoral researcher at the Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences in Maine from 2014-18.

Sara Rivero-Calle joined SkIO in 2020 as an assistant professor. Her research focuses on ocean optics and satellite remote sensing to better understand phytoplankton ecology, ocean biogeochemistry and submesoscale processes.

Rivero-Calle holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology from The Complutense University of Madrid (Spain), a Master’s in Biological Oceanography from the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Biological Oceanography from Johns Hopkins University. Prior to SkIO, Rivero-Calle was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Southern California from 2016-18 and a postdoctoral fellow at the University of North Carolina Wilmington from 2018-20.

About SkIO

The UGA Skidaway Institute of Oceanography (SkIO) is a multidisciplinary research and education institution located on Skidaway Island near Savannah, Georgia. The Institute was founded in 1967 with a mission to conduct research in all fields of oceanography. In 2013, SkIO was merged with the University of Georgia. The campus serves as a gateway to coastal and marine environments for programs throughout the University System. The Institute’s primary goals are to further the understanding of marine and environmental processes, conduct leading-edge research on coastal and marine systems, and train tomorrow’s scientists.
